This impressionistic figurative painting is a typical Gulf Shores beach scene.

The beach has been packed all summer with vacationers. Although I like going to the beach to make photos for my paintings, I can't wait for the quieter fall season when the breezes are cooler and the beach is serene.

BOY CAPTURING OCEAN TREASURES

I went for a walk on the beach yesterday and it was just beautiful!  I got lots of new photos to use as painting references.
 I might as take the rest of the summer off from painting...it has been one thing after the other.
Today it was vertigo...not fun.  I have been painting some watercolor studies to change things up a little. I will post some of them soon.  Also, I have scheduled a couple of painting workshops.  The information is in the right hand margin at the top of my blog.

This brilliant red bird is another that I photographed at the bird banding on Fort Morgan Peninsula

I think he his a little weary from his 40 hour flight from the tropics to the Gulf Coast.

These beautiful birds testify to the glory of God!!

PROTHONOTARY WARBLER

I photographed several colorful birds at the spring bird-banding  on Fort Morgan peninsula last week.

These birds just completed migration from the tropics, about a 40 hour flight.  Fort Morgan is one of their first land stops in the States.   I have no idea how this really yellow warbler got the name prothonotary....what does that mean anyway??

More birds to come.

Also, I was really excited to find that one of my paintings was accepted for the 2013 Oil Painter of America  Salon Exhibition.   I am honored!

The blues on these little birds are so rich!  This one, I photographed at the bird banding in Fort Morgan a while back   He was actually being held by his little feet by one of the bird experts,  so I had to use my imagination for the feet and foliage

Aren't these little newly hatched chicks  the cutest!!   They were only one day old when I photographed them at the Foley Feed Store.   Lots of exotic birds in this store on county road 65 one half block south of 98 in Foley, Alabama.

Painting flowers is difficult enough  but painting back-lit flowers seems to be even more challenging,

There are almost no value changes in the flowers, so I had to rely on color changes and shape to keep it interesting.

I painted a similar still life before  but with a green bottle instead of the blue. 

           

What a great group of artists I had at the workshop!!

I love Ava Jane's door color wheel and the saying underneath...IMAGINATION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN KNOWLEDGE!!




Wow..Look at that breakfast..  mini quiches, sausage balls, fresh fruit skewers and cinnamon monkey bread..and she served lunch too. That's right..both days

This figurative beach scene was my first demonstration in my workshop in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

Ava Jane Newell hosted the workshop at her absolutely charming Art Barn studio.  There are jewels among us and she is definitely one of them.  This was one of the best workshop experiences I have ever had!  I will post more photo's of the workshop in my next post.
